Tree Planting & Habitat Creation
Mature trees can support 1,000s of species, from other plants, fungi, insects, birds and mammals not to mention locking up CO2 for generations.
So when is the best time to plant a tree? 30 years ago.
When is the second best time to plant a tree? Now, but it needs to be the right tree.
It's no good planting a tall, fast growing tree near to power lines as it will just cause problems further down the line and will probably end up being cut down. Likewise you might not want a mighty oak in the middle of an orchard. We belive that planting the right tree in the right place is key. From small scale landscaping projects to larger woodland creation we can help you choose the right tree or trees to suit your location and objectives.
Hedging
Creating a new hedge is a great way to increase security, link habitats, improve biodiversity, define an area or just make a space look nicer. We can advise on the most appropriate type of hedging for your location, source and plant you new hedge. We can even boost the biodiversity net gain by underplanting your hedge with wildflowers.
Once a new hedge has been planted it will need ongoing care from simple grass cutting in the first few years to trimming it as it grows, although it might be better to cut it less frequently depending on the location.
As native hedges get older they can benefit from laying, this is a process of cutting into the stems and folding them over. This rejuvenates the hedge making it thicker at the base encouraging new growth and has many benefits for wildlife, with the bonus of making a thicker stronger hedge.
Habitat Creation
Habitat creation is not just about planting trees and hedges, indeed in some circumstances this isn't the right thing to do.
Habitat creation is all about creating new features in a landscape or enhancing existing ones, this could include sewing wildflower meadows, creating ponds or wetlands, even cutting down trees to open up areas in existing woodland to allow new plants to thrive and to create a woodland with trees of various ages.
We can help create wildflower meadows or strips, from grass verges, embankments or small spaces all the way up to large scale fields.
You can even do your bit at home by making a bug hotel or joining in with things like "No mow may". When it comes to giving nature a little helping hand it all helps.
